This black comedy/tragedy is set in Northern Ireland, in Derry’s Creggan Graveyard. Seven survivors of Bloody Sunday occupy the burial ground: a gravedigger, a young mute, a gay hawker, another man–possibly insane, and three women who are waiting for a miracle. They are waiting for the dead to rise. Throughout the play, the characters fight, love, mourn and have a quiz bowl. Hilarious and tragically beautiful how only the Irish can write, _Carthaginians_ explores what catharsis is possible after trauma and calamity, and where that intersects with all those big identity markers: nationality, religion, gender, sexuality, family…
